At Plum Alley, we specialize in restoring historic windows to their former beauty and functionality. Our detailed restoration process ensures that your windows will look and work like new, while preserving their original charm.
Our Process:
1. Careful Removal and Prep
Sashes are carefully removed from their openings and transported to our workshop.
Temporary OSB plywood is installed to cover the openings, branded with our logo.
Homeowners are responsible for removing any shutters, blinds, or curtains that may obstruct the process.
2. Detailed Paint Stripping and Glass Removal
All paint, including lead-based layers, is completely stripped using safe infrared heat methods.
Old glazing, caulking, and silicon are carefully removed to prevent damage to the glass.
Glass is safely removed, and the sash is sanded, repaired, and primed for a smooth finish.
3. Glazing and Sealing
Glass is polished and reinstalled using Sarco type M glazing putty, creating a tight seal to prevent rattling and water leaks.
Glazier’s points are used to secure the glass in place.
After the putty cures, the sash is painted with two coats of your chosen color, ensuring a weather-resistant seal.
4. Mechanical Makeover
We rerun the weight and pulley system, replacing the original ropes with durable Sampson spot cord.
The weights are accessed, tied, and secured, ensuring smooth operation for another century.
The weight pocket is carefully reassembled, remaining hidden when the sash is closed, while allowing future access if needed.
5. Final Touches
Original locks can be restored, or homeowners can choose new locks for installation.
Every window is restored to its original functionality, opening and closing with ease.
We're here to preserve, build, educate, and spread the joy of windowcrafting with our beloved Texas community. Please tell us how we can help you and we will get back to you promptly.
